del.icio.us

I have made a start with Delicious. I am not really sure if I was using this in the correct way but I found it to be kind of similar to Bloglines. I initially had trouble working out how to add the new urls however "Help!" on the website was very
helpful (ha ha). It really is just the tagging that I am struggling to come to terms with. From looking at others blogs I think that I am quite unique in this. I think it is because cataloguing is quite rigid, and tagging really isn't rigid at all. It really is quite grand in fact, once I got my peabrain around it. Anyway I enjoyed this task. I was able to find some really excellent websites - I like the quotations webpage and I especially added the Thomas Huxley quotation page. A friend drew my attention to this wonderful quote:

Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly.
Thomas H. Huxley
English biologist (1825 - 1895)

I see that one can add a del.icio.us tag to the sidebar of the blog and I am currently trying to work that one out. Oh it is so confusing!!! My brain hurts now. Thursday feels like Friday.

The Librarians -
I have been watching this television show since it began, as I am sure that most library staff workers have been. What started off as being mildly disappointing has really launched itself into grand comedy territory. Last nights episode which culminated with Frances doing a face plant into Christine's clevage was, in my books, comedy gold! I can't wait to see how it all unfolds next week!

Books I've been reading lately.

Recently I have had the pleasure of reading some fantastic books. Fly away Peter by David Malouf was definately the highlight. There is a wonderful passage in it toward the end which I will add later on when I have the book handy. But it was wonderful and I cried - not something that happens that often. Either because the books I read aren't particularly sad or because I am an ice maiden with a heart of steel. I also read Naked by David Sedaris - this was laugh out loud funny. It reminded me a lot of Augusten Burroughs - another favourite of mine. I love him, David Sedaris and knowing he exists in this world makes me very, very, very happy. Oh there are others but really these were the highlights.

rollyo

I have had a quick look at Rollyo. The reference search which was already set up looked good. I would like to have a go at setting up my own search roll but as I am already so far behind I am not going to do that right now. I can see how such a tool could be useful, for example in the tourist information centre we have here in the library, it could be handy to have all relevant sights grouped together under appropriate headings but then some important information isn't available on the internet so what do we do about that. Rollyo, rollyo, rollyo, I am still unsure what I think about it all. I would like to muse about it all or perhaps even write a haiku to help come to terms with it all.
Actually I want to add the link to my blog but am at my wits end! Finally I have asked "Curious" for a hand with that and await her response eagerly.

Anyway here's a haiku composed by the man in this image...

I found Rollyo
The whole world lay itself bare
I know everything

Play week

I have looked at the image generators and library thing, haven't got to Rollyo yet. I am sure they are fun things if you are indeed that way inclined. Here are the results of my "playing".

RSS rules!

All right, all right, all right! The RSS thing is great. Although it did take me a while to nut it out but that is more to do with the fact that I am a stickler for not reading instructions, than any fault of the thing. I have wondered out loud whether the unwillingness to read instructions is, in fact, a character flaw. Maybe it really is just a character trait, rather than a flaw. Anyhoo, back to bloglines. I do actually have a few favourite blogs. So using bloglines means that I have them all in the one place. Revolutionary and brillant. I would like to be able to spend more time finding more blogs in netland but frankly don't have the time. I mean that TV will not watch itself! As far as using it in the library environment for our more internet savvy borrowers I can't begin to imagine how useful it could be. I assume the possibilities are endless and just wish I had the time at work to pursue this path. Hopefully in the future I can push forth with the bloglines in mind. It is a Brave New World. (or just the same old world with some clever tools being developed and used). Yes and here is my list of noteworthy blogs, etc - http://www.bloglines.com/public/deweysnightmare. If there is anyone interested and I am assuming there's quite a few (ahem) people, have a look at Jack Marx's Daily Truth. He is very funny and won the Walkley Award (some journalistic prize) for an article on his experience with Big Russ - http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2006/06/06/1149359738242.html. Well worth a read.

Flickr photos

I have had a look around the flickr site and it is a really fantastic way for people to share their photos. One of my friends uses Flickr to advertise the awesome clothes she designs and makes herself. Her page is called Fashionable Conundrum which is definately worth a look.

Anyway, I thought I would contribute some of my own photos. They were taken on a very quiet afternoon at the library (AFL Grand Final to be precise). The aim was to show people all the different kinds of information that can be accessed through a public library however it quickly degenerated into silliness which is quite fun. Thanks to the wonderfully photogenic Christopher who gladly posed for me. My favourite really is the look of despair on his face at being caught looking at the bunnies on the net.
